On our final day of Social Justice Week our theme of ‘Women - Rooted, Responsive, Relevant’, could once again be seen in every classroom, corridor, and social space in the school. 3rd Year students and our Erasmus + group met with Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade and Minister for Defence Helen McEntee. Students learned about the power of female leadership, empowerment, the importance of education and responsiveness. 5th year students visited the local Arc Cinema to look at our theme through the lense of ‘Mrs.Robinson’, a documentary about the formidable former President of Ireland and former UN Commissioner for Human Rights, Mary Robinson. The documentary examined her life’s work to stand for social and climate justice, work she continues to do. Globe Project joined us in school and took 2nd year students on an exploration of water quality at the River Boyne, while students from 5th year spoke to first year classes about the influence and action they are taking on board from the Shona project. 5th years led peer-teaching once again, this time delivering a series of fast fashion workshops to 2nd years looking in particular at the lifecycle of a t-shirt. As social justice week drew to a close it was evident that the issues raised here over the course of the week had been embraced by both students and staff in a most wholehearted way and have laid the foundations and started a process for response and action going forward.
