In very windy conditions our Senior soccer team played the Division one League final today against St. Vincents Dundalk.
The girls started strong having the advantage of the wind in the first half and we got an opening goal by Sophie Brady. The girls continued to play well against a strong Dundalk team but held onto the lead going into half time.
Against the wind in the second half we had a tough job and Dundalk kept our goalie Eleanor busy and managed to pull a goal back. This was to be the final whistle score of 1-1.
The game went to extra time, again with the wind making it difficult for both teams. Dundalk were first to score in extra time, the scoreline now being 2-1 at half time of extra time. The last ten minutes showed the Loreto girls great determination and spirit and Aisling got a equaliser with 6 minutes left. The last play of the game was a corner kick taken by captain Erin. The ball was not cleared away by the defence and Jane Smyth managed to get on the end of the ball and scored the winning goal for Loreto. The final score was 3-2.
Thank you to Dundalk for a great game of football.
Well done to all the squad today, a great win for the girls.
